Top 5 Albums Listened To At Home

Ok - I'll start this out with a simple list - For your consideration I give you the top 5 albums from Steve's music room this week:

5) Johnny Hodges: Previously Unreleased Recordings [Verve - Lp]
4) Tommy Guerrero: Another Late Night [Teacle - CD]
3) Sam Rivers: The Live Trio Sessions [Impulse - Lp]
2) Henry Threadgill: X-75 Vol.1 [Novus - Lp]
1) Vandermark 5: The Color Of Memory [Atavistic - CD]

I've also been sneaking tracks from Lyrics Born's "Same !@#$ Different Day" Lp - what can I say - it makes me happy...

Awesome list, Steve - I can't say that I have heard of *any* of those artists. But I did notice that they are all men...much of a trend in your recordings collection?

I haven't been listening to too much recorded music this week, but I *did* I pull some lyrics sheets I got at the Voiceworks workshop out of my kitchen drawer, and have been lustily singing Tammy Wynette and George Jones songs to the bemusement of the small people in my home. Yeehaw!

Hey Steve,

I have to agree with Tracy, I haven't heard of any of these either, and I consider myself to be out there on the fringe (musically speaking!) Maybe future posts could include a genre if not obvious, so I don't have to track everything down through artistdirect.com.

I rarely listen to "albums" at home, usually in my car or at work, but my car CD player went on the fritz, so I've been rediscovering some old cassettes (maybe you can explain that to our younger readers.) :) Today, I harked back to Beck's Odelay.

Regarding the anonymity, I'll open up as I get a better feel for everyone here. Hope thats okay.

I'll try and make a point of putting in a little more info when I make lists. Sites like artistdirect.com and allmusic.com are great resources though. With the (almost) complete death of decent radio, sometimes the best way to get exposed to new music is to read about it. That is, unless you have an independent record store near by...

As for the anonymity issue - I think "redraven in kentucky" works fine. I found in the past that if you ask people to identify themselves somehow they're much less likely to be aggressive or profane - even if they're just using an alias. Thanks for posting!

P.S. Tracy T. - if you've got a good wig and the proper makeup - I'd love to host a Tammy Wynette "in store" anytime you're ready!

Just thought I'd drop the top 5 things I've been listening to this week. . .American Analog Set (the new one). . .Smog "A River Ain't Too Much To Love". . .Tim Fite "Gone Ain't Gone" (very creative song-writer employing various samples. . .like the Ramones meet Beck in DJ Shadow's basement for a jam). . .Julie Doiron & Wooden Stars (can't go a week w/o Julie!!). . .last but not least, Langhorne Slim "When the Sun's Gone Down" (think Danny Barnes hopped up on more than coffee!!!) All of these are highly recomended and should be in stock at Quimper Sound. . .or they'll get 'em for ya real quick.

Yo La Tengo's "Prisoners of Love: A Smattering of Scintillating Senescent Songs 1985-2003" Had to look up "senescent." As far as compilations go, this is a healthy one (two discs of previously released songs and one disc of outtakes and rarities). It is going to work well for a friend of mine who wanted a primer on YLT.

The Bad Plus "These Are the Vistas" This is my first time listening to an entire record of these guys, a trio I had hoped to see at the Istanbul Jazz Fest based on the strength of the recommendations but couldn't. I think I am going to like these piano-driven exploratons and covers more and more with repeated playings.

Al Green "I'm Still in Love with You" Yes I can be romantic.

Camper Van Beethoven "II and III" Their reunion is one I can get excited about, especially with the original lineup (i.e. Jonathan on violin). Don't know when I'll get the chance, though.

Dirty Three "Horse Stories" Wanted to listen to something while grading a numbing stack of Greek roots quizzes. An inspired choice.
